Thank you to all of you who suggested that I should head up to the Maine coast this weekend – unfortunately getting to the Arcadia National Park and back proved to be impossible within the available time, but I did base myself at Damiscotta about an hour or so north of Portland, and explore the Pemaquid Peninsula.

As I first timer to Maine I was struck by the beauty of the place. Sure, every building was a pastiche of the New England house that you see in films, and the fallage was over, but the colours and the light were spectacular and the warmth of the welcome was extraordinary. Everyone I passed raised a hand to say hello; every placed I stopped I was made to feel welcome or given a heap of recommendations of places to go.

I did get up at 4am on Saturday morning and drive out to the Pemaquid Lighthouse – to be met by a full-on Atlantic chill. Clambering over the slippery rocks with a tripod and camera in hand was not the easiest of things to do in the dark, but I think the results were worth it. Certainly the dawn was beautiful and the day remained fresh with blue skies.

I wish I had had longer, but Maine definitely made an impression on me and is without doubt a place that I will return to.
